The development history of high temperature alloys in the UK

The UK is the first country in the world to research and develop high-temperature alloys. British turbine engine technology developed rapidly during World War II, especially the Royal Air Force’s engine development, which made major breakthroughs. In order to meet the requirements for parts in the high-temperature environment of turbine engines, the British Mond Nickel Company (later renamed International Nickel Corporation) successfully developed Nimonic 75 alloy in 1939, which was the world’s first high-temperature alloy. Nimonic 75 alloy is an 80Ni-20Cr electric heating alloy, which is added with 0.3% titanium and 0.1% carbon. It has good creep properties. At 800°C and 47MPa stress, the creep strain does not exceed 300 hours. 0.1%. Although this alloy has low creep strength, its manufacturing process is relatively simple and is suitable for making plate parts such as plates and flame tubes.

In order to improve the creep strength, Mond Nickel Company improved the Nimonic 75 alloy, increased the titanium content to 2.5%, added about 1% aluminum, and successfully developed the Nimonic 80 alloy. This is the world’s first turbine blade alloy reinforced with Ni3 (Al, Ti), which was officially used in 1941. In 1944, the Al and Ti content of Nimonic 80 was adjusted, and the production process was improved, developing into Nimonic 80A. In 1945, Nimonic 80A was developed into Nimonic 90 alloy by replacing nickel with 20% cobalt. In 1951, better thermal processing methods were used to further increase the Al and Ti content of Nimonic 90 alloy, and Nimonic 95 alloy was developed. In 1955, in order to further improve the creep strength, molybdenum was added to the Nimonic 90 alloy and the Al and Ti contents were selected more precisely to develop the Nimonic 100 alloy. From 1991 to 1955, the service temperature of Nimonic alloys increased by approximately 120°C. Before Nimonic 95 and Nimonic 100 were used in industry, Nimonic 105 alloy was successfully developed in 1958. In the 1960s, vacuum technology was widely used. Nimonic 115 was successfully developed in 1959, and later Nimonic 118 and Nimonic 120 alloys were successfully developed. These alloys are mainly used to make turbine blades and are wrought alloys. These alloys are also available as casting alloys for investment casting into complex shaped parts. Cast Nimonic alloys are called Nimocast alloys, such as Nimocast 75, 80 and 90. After that, some casting alloys with better properties were developed, and directionally solidified and single-crystal alloys were developed, such as single-crystal high-temperature alloys SRR99, SRR2000 and SRR2060 developed by Rolls-Royce.

After decades of development, British high-temperature alloy technology has developed a series of varieties, which have improved the service temperature and creep strength of high-temperature alloys, significantly improving the high-temperature resistance of turbine blades and other parts. British high-temperature alloy technology also provides valuable experience and reference for the development of high-temperature alloy technology in other countries around the world.
