Research status and future development of nickel-based superalloys and laser additive manufacturing technology for aerospace applications

With the rapid development of aerospace technology, spacecraft components are developing in the direction of complexity, thin-walling, compounding, and integration. Traditional casting or forging processing technologies are no longer able to meet the manufacturing needs of these high-performance components. Laser additive manufacturing (LAM) technology, as a manufacturing method based on layer-by-layer accumulation, provides an ideal solution for the manufacturing of nickel-based superalloy components in the aerospace field. This article will introduce the current research status of nickel-based superalloys for aerospace and its laser additive manufacturing technology, and look forward to future development trends. At the same time, we will focus on ANTON METAL’s contribution in this field.

Ⅰ. Research status of nickel-based superalloys for aerospace and its laser additive manufacturing technology

1. Commonly used types of nickel-based high-temperature alloys in the aerospace field: Commonly used nickel-based high-temperature alloys in the aerospace field include INCONEL 718, INCONEL 625, etc. These alloys have excellent mechanical properties, heat resistance and corrosion resistance, making them ideal materials for key components of spacecraft.

2. Current research status of nickel-based superalloy additive manufacturing: Taking INCONEL 718, INCONEL 625 alloys as examples, researchers have summarized nickel-based superalloy additive manufacturing process optimization methods, including comprehensive processing diagrams and experimental design methods for additive manufacturing . At the same time, the researchers also pointed out the microstructural characteristics of additively manufactured nickel-based superalloy materials, and discussed the influence of subsequent heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured materials.

3. Advantages of additive manufacturing technology: Through five typical cases of additive manufacturing of nickel-based high-temperature alloy aerospace components, the advantages of additive manufacturing technology in the aerospace field are demonstrated. These cases include complex structural components, thin-walled components, composite components, and integrated components.

Ⅱ. Future development trends

1. In view of the key scientific issues and technical difficulties existing in the additive manufacturing process of nickel-based superalloys, future research directions include:

- Further optimize the additive manufacturing process to improve the manufacturing accuracy and performance of nickel-based high-temperature alloy components;

- Study the microstructure evolution of nickel-based high-temperature alloy materials produced by additive manufacturing to provide a theoretical basis for process optimization;

- Develop a new heat treatment process to solve the local micro-segregation phenomenon inside the additively manufactured nickel-based high-temperature alloy materials and improve the material properties;

- Explore the integration of additive manufacturing and traditional manufacturing technologies to achieve efficient, low-cost and high-performance manufacturing of spacecraft components.

2. ANTON METAL will continue to pay attention to the research progress of nickel-based superalloys and its laser additive manufacturing technology in the future, and provide higher-performance alloy materials and manufacturing technology support for the aerospace field.
