Inconel 625 : Leading the Evolution of Materials Technology

Inconel 625 is an alloy grade with a density of 8.4 g/cm3 and a melting point of 1290-1350°C. It has excellent resistance to inorganic acid corrosion and various corrosive media in oxidizing and reducing environments. For example, Inconel 625 has excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion and erosion in chloride media.

Inconel 625 features include:

1) Excellent resistance to various corrosive media in oxidizing and reducing environments;
2) Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, and not affected by stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride;
3) Excellent resistance to inorganic acid corrosion (such as nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and mixed acids of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid);
4) Excellent corrosion resistance to any mixed solution of inorganic acids;
5) At a temperature of 40°C, it has good corrosion resistance to hydrochloric acid solutions of various concentrations;
6) It has good processability and weldability, and will not be susceptible to post-weld cracking;
7) Certification that can manufacture pressure vessels with wall temperatures ranging from -196°C to 450°C;
8) Comply with NACE certification (MR-01-75), the highest standard Grade VII for use in sour gas environments.

Inconel 625 has a face-centered cubic structure. When it is exposed to thermal protection at 650°C for a long enough time, the carbon particles and unstable quaternary phase will precipitate and transform into a stable Ni3 (Nb, Ti) orthorhombic structure. After solution treatment, the molybdenum and niobium components in the nickel-chromium matrix will improve the mechanical properties of the metal, but will reduce the plasticity of the steel.

Inconel 625 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in many media. It exhibits excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion and erosion in chloride media. It has good resistance to inorganic acid corrosion, such as nitric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc. At the same time, it is corrosion-resistant to alkali and organic acids in oxidizing and reducing environments.

Inconel 625 also has effective resistance to chloride reduction stress corrosion cracking (SCCR). It is virtually corrosion-free in seawater and industrial gases and has high corrosion resistance to seawater and salt solutions, even at high temperatures.

Inconel 625 exhibits no sensitivity during welding. It resists carbonization and oxidation in both static and cyclic environments. It is also resistant to corrosion from chlorine-containing gases.

The chemical composition of Inconel 625 includes: nickel (minimum 58.0%), chromium (20.0-23.0%), iron (maximum 5.0%), molybdenum (8.0-10.0%), niobium (plus tantalum 3.15-4.15%), carbon (maximum 0.10%), manganese (max. 0.50%), silicon (max. 0.50%), phosphorus (max. 0.015%), sulfur (max. 0.015%), aluminum (max. 0.40%), titanium (max. 0.40%), cobalt (max. 1.0 %).

Mechanical properties of Inconel 625 include: tensile strength, yield strength (0.2% offset), elongation, area reduction and Brinell hardness. These properties vary in different forms and conditions such as rods, plates, coils and tubes.

Inconel 625 has a wide range of applications. Low carbon alloy 625 (after soft annealing) is widely used in the chemical process industry. Its good corrosion resistance and high strength allow it to be used as a thin structural component. Alloy 625 can be used in applications that require contact with seawater and withstand high mechanical stress.

Typical applications include:

1) Components of chlorine-containing organic chemical processes, especially where acidic chloride catalysts are used;
2) Digesters and bleaching tanks for the pulp and paper industry;
3) Absorption tower, reheater, flue gas inlet baffle, fan (wet), agitator, deflection plate and flue in the flue gas desulfurization system;
4) Equipment and components used in sour gas environments;
5) Acetic acid and ethyl acetate reaction generator;
6) Sulfuric acid condenser.
