Hastelloy B4: An Impenetrable Shield against Corrosion in High-Temperature Applications

Hastelloy B-4 is a high-temperature, high-strength corrosion-resistant alloy with excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. It is composed primarily of the elements nickel, chromium, molybdenum and iron, with a molybdenum content of up to 16-18%, which allows the B-4 alloy to excel in high temperature and corrosive environments. Specific Grades:
Common grades of Hastelloy B-4 include UNS N10665, ASTM B335, ASME SB-335, W.Nr. 2.4617 and others.

Specific Composition:
The chemical composition of Hastelloy B-4 is as follows (in weight %):

Nickel (Ni): 65.0%.
Chromium (Cr): 16.0-18.0 %
Molybdenum (Mo): 16.0-18.0 %
Iron (Fe): 1.0% (max)
Manganese (Mn): 1.0% (max)
Carbon (C): 0.01% (max)
Silicon (Si): 0.08% (max)
Phosphorus (P): 0.04% (max)
Sulfur (S): 0.03% (max)
Copper (Cu): 0.5% (max)
Aluminium (Al): 0.2% (max)
Forging:
Hastelloy B-4 can be shaped by hot and cold forging.

Heat Treatment:
Hastelloy B-4 can be heat treated by heat treatment processes such as solution annealing and cooling to improve its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Cold working:
Due to its good plasticity and malleability, Hastelloy B-4 can be subjected to various cold working operations such as cold rolling, cold drawing and cold bending.

Corrosion Resistance:
Hastelloy B-4 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in a wide range of corrosive media, including acids, chlorides, nitrates and hydrofluoric acid. It can also withstand some strong acidic corrosive media at high temperatures.

Mechanical Properties:
Hastelloy B-4 has excellent high-temperature, high-strength properties and wear resistance, and its mechanical properties mainly include tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness.

Welding Material Grades:

Hastelloy B-4 can be welded using the same type of welding consumables, common welding consumables include ERNiMo-7 and ENiMo-7.

Areas of Application:

Hastelloy B-4 is widely used in petroleum, chemical, aerospace and nuclear industries. It is widely used in the chemical industry as production equipment for various corrosive media, such as acidic, alkaline, hydrochloric, sulphuric and chloride. In the aerospace field, Hastelloy B-4 is used in the manufacture of high-temperature components such as aero-engine parts and gas turbines. In the nuclear industry, Hastelloy B-4 is used to manufacture equipment such as reactor pressure vessels and heat exchangers. In addition, Hastelloy B-4 is widely used in marine engineering, fertiliser production and other fields.
